Lizzie and Erich’s wedding at Roche Harbor Resort was one for the books. These two self-proclaimed “super nerds” built a day that was unapologetically them—nerdy, heartfelt, and full of creativity. From Marvel details to nautical touches, every single piece of their wedding was handcrafted with love, laughter, and a whole lot of personality.
A Love Story Rooted in Wonder

Their story started on a dating app after college, bonding over their shared curiosity about the universe and completely different senses of humor. Years of laughter, surviving a pandemic together, and becoming each other’s best friend led them to this beautiful celebration on San Juan Island.
Erich, an aerospace engineer, and Lizzie, a geneticist, may spend their work days launching rockets and studying the tiniest details of biology—but their wedding day was all about connection, emotion, and creativity.
A Wedding Filled With Personal Touches

What made their day so special was how much of themselves they poured into it. Erich 3D printed their decor, lights, cake topper, and even his bowtie! Lizzie hand painted their flowers, crafted table arrangements, and designed the overall decor with her artistic eye. Together, they turned Roche Harbor Resort into a celebration space that radiated their personalities.

The theme blended nautical vibes with Marvel energy—subtle nods to superheroes and oceanic life tucked into every detail. It was a wedding that made guests smile at every corner, whether it was a centerpiece, a handmade floral detail, or that incredible one-of-a-kind bowtie.
Surrounded by Loved Ones

Their family and friends traveled from all over the country to celebrate with them. From the moment the ceremony began, emotions ran high—tears were shed during heartfelt speeches, laughter echoed across the dance floor, and hugs were shared all throughout the day.
One of the sweetest parts? Their pup, Pepper Potts (yes, named after Iron Man’s leading lady), made an appearance to soak in the love right alongside them.

A Celebration to Remember

As the night went on, the dance floor came alive with joy. Guests danced with abandon, Lizzie and Erich shared quiet smiles and loud laughs, and the celebration carried on under the glow of lights strung across Roche Harbor.
And in true Lizzie fashion, she closed out the evening with an epic outfit change. For her late-night wedding look, she repurposed her mother’s wedding blazer—turning it into a chic, meaningful statement piece to honor her family while celebrating her own love story. It was the perfect way to end a day that was all about connection, intention, and making things their own.

This day wasn’t just about a wedding—it was about two people building a life together, full of wonder, creativity, and laughter. Lizzie and Erich proved that when you infuse your wedding with who you really are, magic happens.
Iconic San Juan Island Wedding Photo Spots Nearby

One of the best parts about hosting a wedding at Roche Harbor Resort is the incredible photo opportunities just steps away. We spent time at the historic John McMillin Mausoleum (also known as the Afterglow Vista), where towering stone columns and forest backdrops created a moody, magical atmosphere for portraits. It felt like stepping into another world—perfect for a couple who loves a bit of whimsy.

Another favorite nearby spot is Lime Kiln Lighthouse, perched on the rugged coastline of San Juan Island. Known as one of the best whale-watching points in the Pacific Northwest, it also makes for a breathtaking backdrop at sunset. Couples can even call ahead and schedule a time to go inside the lighthouse for photos, which adds a truly unique and adventurous element to their wedding gallery.
Because the lighthouse is located within Lime Kiln Point State Park, you’ll need a Washington State Parks Special Use Permit for photography there. This applies to both elopements and full wedding photo sessions. You can find details and applications on the Washington State Parks Special Use Permit page, and it’s best to apply early to make sure your date is secured.

Having iconic locations like the John McMillin Mausoleum and Lime Kiln Lighthouse so close to Roche Harbor means couples can easily blend romance, history, and adventure into their wedding day.
